Does one sidechain?

One does but not in the traditional 'get the bass out the way of the kick' fashion.

I'll use a sidechain as a way of ducking effects out the way of a vocal, for instance, so that vocal delays don't garble the vocal and instead rise up to fill the gaps.

Or, on a multi-mic drum recording I'll use a sidechained expander as a way of using a close mic signal to shape a room mic - so that the room mics get 3dB louder every time the kick and snare hit.

Or, I'll use one to make a compressor sensitive to a particular frequency if, say, the low-end of a synth is masking the warmth of a vocal.
