How does it relate to making mistakes in the more technical senses vs a broader approach to creative openness and design philosophy in general? I am thinking back to a guitarists interview I read long ago where he said growing up he deliberately avoided learning to play anybody elses music (e.g. to practice metallica or hendrix etc by rote) as a means of fidelity to his own sound and creativity.
