Hi I would like to know what's the worst piece of advice you've ever been given?

'Get a trade, sign up for a pension, and settle down.' When I was 16.

I knew I wanted to be a pop-star, or, failing that, a record producer, when I was 13 but whenever I told my careers teachers at school they shook their heads and impatiently flapped their papers about.

At my school, if you weren't going to join the army, you had a choice between being a builder or working at the Buxted chicken factory. Most of my friends became builders, a few embarked upon a career eviscerating chickens and I reluctantly learned to be a paint-sprayer, spraying cars.

I did that for a few years before eventually getting fired for spending most of my time in the toilets, smoking joints and reading studio technology magazines.

In hindsight I wish I'd ignored all the unimaginative bastards who told me I couldn't do music and just got on with it. As it was I waited until I was 22 before I decided I'd had enough of drudgery and bullshitted my way into a job as an engineer at a studio.
