Start with the overheads and/or stereo room mics and use only enough close mic to give definition.
Keep an ear on the spill when applying EQ and compression. Off-axis signals behave differently to on-axis signals. Resist the urge to completely gate out spill.
Treat the kit as an instrument and don't obsess about separation. Cohesion is more important.
